Free Shipping Day 2018: Everything you need to know

The holiday rush is on as shoppers try to beat the clock to have their items delivered in time for Christmas. To help with the frenzy, a number of retailers are participating in Free Shipping Day 2018.

This year, Free Shipping Day is Friday, December 14, 2018, so you’d better hurry if you want to take advantage. This is the ship-by date that retailers are guaranteeing that your packages will be delivered in time for Christmas.

Hurry! Free Shipping Day is Dec. 14

Free Shipping Day came about when many stores decided to band together to offer a day of free shipping. They knew that the incentive would bring consumers en masse to places like the Post Office and their local UPS and FedEx stores.

As a result, those retailers will have extra hands on deck to alleviate some of the package crush. They also see a spike in sales, so as you can see, Free Shipping Day is a win-win for customers and businesses.

Online spending this holiday is expected to see a nearly 15% increase to $124 billion, according to a forecast by Adobe Analytics, a company that tracks transactions from top retailers.

Free Shipping Day: A brief history

Free Shipping Day is generally thought to have sprang up around 2008. Time Magazine credits Luke and Maisie Knowles, founders of retail sites CouponSherpa.com and FreeShipping.org, as the founders.

The Knowles family is on record as saying that more than 700 retailers participated in 2009, and more than 1,500 joined in the following year. The day has grown exponentially since that time.

Another popular consumer site, FreeShippingDay.com, says it is will not be hosting Free Shipping Day offers from participating retailers. The site will continue to host shipping offers year round, but says, “It’s been an incredible journey, but now it’s time we settle in for a long winter’s nap.”
